What Does It Feel Like To Have ADHD?
Mr Kaplin
Mr. Kaplin, like many parents who homeschooled during the pandemic, gained a deep appreciation for the work of teachers managing energetic children. After months of challenging moments, he suspected there might be more than just quarantine stress affecting his daughter, Mia. Following assessments Mia received a diagnosis of ADHD. During this process, Mr. Kaplin also discovered his own undiagnosed ADHD. As part of their journey to better understand and care for their mental health, Mr. Kaplin and Mia decided to create a short film to educate and guide others facing similar experiences.
The music and sound effects aim to capture the disorienting, sometimes frustrating, yet whimsical nature of ADHD. To achieve this, the soundtrack is intentionally off-beat, with constantly shifting tempos and styles. Sound effects primarily feature organic foley and atmospheric field recordings to ground the project in realism, while playful, cartoon-inspired sounds add a lighthearted touch that complements the animation’s style. Mia and Rob visited the Box of Toys London studio to record the voice over, adding a genuine touch to the narration.
